Abstract:

Sarajevo 2001. December, near the end of Ramadan, near the end of Chanukah, approaching Christmas and a few of us, Jews, Muslims, and Christians were in the Aeroplan Restaurant debating how to continue our collaborations which had begun a few years previously. At that meeting we established the International Summer School on Religion and Public Life (ISSRPL) what became with time, and remains, CEDAR- Communities Engaging with Religion and Difference. About four years earlier Rusmir Mahmutcehajic had invited me to Sarajevo to find out just who I was. A visiting American sociologist had given him my book on trust, and he realized that this was the most important component of any post-war social order in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He had invited me to Sarajevo to learn more on trust and how it could be promoted in society. That first meeting, back in the late 1990’s became the basis of many joint projects and inter-commual activities.

Abstract:

This article presents some of the research insights into the works of Rusmir Mahutćehajić concerning Bosnian identity, comparative configurations of cultural forms, disavowal of ethnopolitics, opening up the horizons of Bosnian historical and cultural plurality, cultural dogmatism of interpreters and advocacy for dialogue on all conceivable issues of human existence. It is quite obvious that there are interlocutors who cannot free themselves from being imprisoned in the imagination of a definitive “truth” or a rounded “speech”. Therefore, any advocacy for preserving an open communicative process of conversation with competent and argumentatively trained interlocutors who are aware that dialogue between rational human beings can never end is of utmost importance.

Abstract:

In this paper, we deal with the works of Rusmir Mahmutćehajić, which in the broadest sense of the word can be classified as literary – from early lyrical-philosophical prose, through short stories dealing with cultural and identity engagement, travelogues resulting from travels and searching for oneself in the Orient and the Occident, essays focused on various issues of Bosnia, and all the way to serious literary-critical and literary-theoretical studies centered on the most important works of Bosnia. The editorial-critical presentations and readings of Skender Kulenović and Mak Dizdar should not be neglected. If in Mahmutćehajić's overall oeuvre the topic of Bosnia is called an obsessive topic, which is one of the conclusions of this paper, then in a methodological and intellectual sense, perennial philosophy is called the model through which Mahmutćehajić offers his understanding of the world around him and the world within himself. According to the same model of approach to reading and understanding the intricate and deep lines of poetry of Skender Kulenović and Mako Dizdar, the mysterious textual and contextual meanings and meanings of the ballads of Hasanaginica. Ultimately, we have a studious one, with new research and insights into the cultural and general history of Bosnia, and new spiritually enriched approaches to understanding both the world of reality and the world of literary works.

Abstract:

In this paper, I will hermeneutically explain the relationship between modernity and tradition in the vision of Rusmir Mahmutćehajić, relying on his book The Bosnian Answer. On modernity and tradition (Mahmutćehajić 2012). Before that, I will briefly say something about the author's life and work, then about the perennial philosophy he deals with, and finally I will briefly repeat the essential thoughts contained in his works Little Knowledge. About the other in Muslim vistas (Mahmutćehajić 2005) and Hval i Djeva (Mahmutćehajić 2011a; 2011b; 2011c), which I have already written about before.

Abstract:

Rusmir Mahmutćehajić is one of the most prominent representatives of the traditional school in Bosnia, essentially inspired by the idea of philosophia perennis as presented in the works of Rene Guenon, Frithof Schoun, Titus Burkhart and Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Mahmutćehajić's books demonstrate a determined effort to reconstruct intellectual and spiritual life in Bosnia as a place of unifying experience of East and West on the principles of Tradition and perennial thought. His writings on the Bosnian experience of religious plurality, understanding religion, the relationship between tradition and modernity, the phenomenology of signs, and the development of a specific model of the philosophy of religion are the questions that we will be interested in in this article.

Abstract:

This short text is both the reminder and the acknowledgement of my deep gratitude towards the friendship that Rusmir Mahmutćehajić granted me over about twenty five years. My friend did not only keep an indefectible friendship towards me but, doing, so taught me what friendship means through the personal relation it lives through. Due to the circumstances of our first meeting, the grievance time after genocide when reconciliation was the only way of hope, this friendship had already risen out of a political frame and challenged by politics. It opened thus both the question of the essence of politics and its factual economy and the necessity of friendship both as a resistance to politisation and yet the impossible beyond that provides politics its horizon and limitation.

Abstract:

The first time I met Rusmir Mahmutcehajic, in Sarajevo in 2004, we walked together down Ferhadija, past the Clock Tower and on towards Saraci and the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque. As we walked Rusmir told me about Bosnia’s recent history, the tragedies of conflicts between religions, and what might offer hope for the future. And he said something that I have always remembered, and struggled with, and believed even as I struggled. Rusmir said: to truly understand each other, to truly know one another and to be at true peace and oneness with each other, we must love what the other loves. For a Muslim, like Rusmir, that means loving Jesus Christ as I, a Christian, love Jesus Christ. For a Christian, like me, that means loving The Prophet as he, Rusmir, loves The Prophet. Only when we find our way to that shared love, said Rusmir, could we truly be at peace and oneness with each other: when we truly loved what each other loved, more than anything else in the world that might divide us.

For several decades, Rusmir Mahmutćehajić has been a key figure in Bosnian intellectual life, and a crucial builder of transnational links between Bosnia and the wider world. This article focuses on just one aspect of this link-building: his activities as a translator and a commissioner of translated work, on topics as varied as philosophy, religion, poetry, and translation studies. The evidence presented in this article shows Mahmutćehajić to be a “dedicated expert” in this field: in other words, someone who plays a central role in opening and maintaining important channels of communication across languages and cultures. This has happened not just via his own translations, but also by the translation projects he has commissioned, and by the other actors he has enlisted into these projects.
